Hungarian Photographer Captures Luminous Photos Around The World

We share so much amazing travel photography on our blog because we are amazed at the beautiful world we live in and how photographs can capture that beauty so uniquely.

7 Great Travel Photography Tips To Remember

Traveling is fun to do all throughout the year. You may be taking a family vacation over the summer and want to photograph all the great things you do and see. Perhaps, you are traveling with your goal being to capture great photos of landscapes, unique places, events or people. No matter your reason for your travels, you always want to plan ahead and keep a few things in mind to make sure your photos turn out how you hope they do. 

Today, we want to share 7 great travel photography tips that you want to remember before and during your travels. Safe travels and happy photographing!

1. Do Your Research

Before you go, you want to do your research of the location you are visiting. You can find really great locations that are popular around that city or town, off-the-beaten areas that may be unique to photograph and events or fairs that may take place that would be great to capture the culture and people of the destination. 

Doing research is also important so you make sure you bring travel items that are necessary during your visit. You would not want to be without sunscreen if you will be roaming outside in the sun all day or bug spray if you are in a state park that has tons of trees and mosquitos.

2. Pack Essential Gear and Backups

When packing, you want to make sure you pack your camera, extra backup batteries and lenses. It is also important to have a reliable camera bag or book bag you can easily explore while carrying your equipment and items comfortably. Also, you may want to have a laptop, extra memory cards and a removable drive back at your hotel if you need to store your photos there to keep everything organized. Depending on what you plan to photograph, you may also need a tripod. Here are a few reasons why a tripod may come in handy.

3. Dress Comfortably 

You want to make sure you dress comfortably when you are out photographing and you want to be prepared. Dress according to the weather... you would hate to be sweating in jeans when it is going to be 90 degrees outside. Being hot can distract you from enjoying the sites and capturing amazing photos. Also, wear comfortable shoes that you can get around in easily. You do not want to fall while carrying your expensive equipment (and of course so you do not injure yourself)! A wide brimmed hat may also be helpful in keeping the sun out of your face.

4. Get Out Early

When you are traveling, it is always nice to get out early before the rush, especially if you are photographing a busy city. This will give you time to capture the architecture and other details without tons of people crowded around getting in the way of your photos. 

It is also great to get out early to take photos in the beautiful morning light. Once the morning is over, the late afternoon into the evening when the sun sets is also an ideal time to capture photos. This time is called the 'magic hour' and your scenes can be illuminated with a warm, golden glow. 

5. Shoot In RAW 

When you shoot in RAW, you can go back at any time and process the image in a different way. It's good to have the original RAW file to convert again and again.

6. Take Candid Shots

When traveling, while you may want to have a few posed shots if you are with your family or friends, candid shots that are very natural and can make some awesome shots. Take photos of subjects who are unaware you are photographing them. Perhaps a group of people enjoying a bite at a sidewalk cafe, or a few children playing around near a farmers market or playground. Finding those places and people that showcase the uniqueness and culture of that city can be perfect for your travel photos. 

7.   Look For Unique Areas or Architecture

One great thing about travel photography is the ability to get out and explore the unique areas and architecture in that city or town. Keep an eye out for unique textures, bright colors or cool patterns that would make for a nice shot. The possibilities are truly endless!

Here Are 6 Reasons Why A Travel Photographer Needs A Tripod

A tripod can be a pain for a photographer. They are heavy and can be a pain to carry around with you - especially if you are going on a long hike or exploring during your travels. Even though they can be somewhat annoying, it is a very important piece of equipment for a travel or landscape photographer.

Here are 6 reasons why a travel photographer needs a tripod:

1. A tripod allows you to photograph at dawn and dusk. 

Dawn and dusk typically offers awesome light, and this soft light can give a beautiful look to your photographs. Due to the low light conditions, you will not be able to hold the camera with your hands so in order to capture sharp images, and to avoid that pesky camera shake, you need to use a tripod. 

2. A tripod allows you to photograph at night. 

Taking photos at night without a tripod is pretty impossible. You really can not achieve a fast enough shutter speed just by raising your ISO - your photo will just not be sharp enough or have an acceptable level of noise for professional or personal use. 

3. A tripod allows for artistic vision. 

No matter what time of day it is, you may always find yourself wishing you had your tripod with you. If you are trying to photograph a body of water, waterfall or even just a fountain, and you want to be sure to capture the smooth look of the water, you will need to use neutral density filters which means you are limiting the amount of light that enters the camera. In turn, you will need to use a slower shutter speed and a tripod is always great to have on hand when using that speed! 

4. A tripod can help you capture unique angles. 

One of the best advantages of using a tripod is that it allows you to take photos at interesting angles and shoot from positions that you may not be able to otherwise. 

5. A tripod can help you take better photos. 

Another awesome thing about using a tripod is that you do not have to be constantly connected to your camera by having to always hold it. You can use your mobility to look more closely at the scene you are trying to shoot which in turn can make for some really amazing photos. 

6. A tripod helps to support a flash. 

Every once in awhile you will need to use your flash at a different position to the usual one mounted to the top of your camera. In these situations, a tripod is so essential to hold your flash in position.

Who doesn't love to travel? There are so many amazing places around the world to see and explore and taking great photos of those places is a great way to capture the memories and things you have seen. Whether you like to explore places in your own state, or you frequently travel around the world, you want your photos to be amazing and showcase the amazing things you go. We found a great article on Huffington Post on 12 ways to take your travel photography to the next level that we wanted to show you and hope it will help you with your own photos. 

Here are 12 tips to take your travel photography to the next level. 

1. Don't worry over your equipment. 

The equipment you have does not make the photo. The photographer makes the photos. Do not think that just because you do not have the most expensive camera that you can not take the best photos. Go out with the camera and equipment that you already have and learn how it can perform at its best.

2. Research the destination. 

Before you travel somewhere when you are hoping to get some great photography, you have to do your research. Make sure you know when is the best time of year to go, what you should be sure to see while you are there and how to get from one place to another. You also want to make sure you know what some of the best photo opportunities are like a popular festival, beautiful body of water or local architecture. 

3. Look behind the monument everyone sees.

Look at your surroundings and take everything in. Do not try to obsess over taking that "postcard" photo of a specific popular spot. Find the hidden treasures and you will see those treasures captured in great photography. 

4. Study natural light carefully.

Make sure you learn that there are different types of light and your photos will depend on that light. This also means that you have the chance to pick the type of light that you want to take the photo. It is important to study the light that is available at the scene. Perhaps another time of day may be better than the moment you are in with the light that is available.

5. Don't ignore artificial light. 

Do not ignore artificial light sources because if you do, you may never see how much you can achieve with them. Examples of artificial light could include a campfire or even a street light on a walkway. Play with shadows, look for contrasts and do not forget reflections. 

6. Play around with composition. 

Do not forget that an image can work to convey and emotion or a mood, as well as capturing a memory. Do not let the novelty and the excitement of the exotic destination or amazing place make you forget how to frame and compose your photos.

7. Remember that good photos are not the products of luck.

You may think that some photographers have such wonderful luck when they are taking a photo; that they just happened to be in the right place at the right time. That really is rarely the case. Make sure you get a rough idea of what you want to photograph ahead of time and prepare. Look for locations, familiarize yourself with the location and do your research. 

8. Interact with your subject. 

Taking photos of strangers can be challenging and many people will shy away from interacting with people they do not know. Interacting with your possible subject can really help you get a very powerful photo of that person. When you interact with someone you are capturing in a photo, that interaction is normally evident in the photos. You may see a trust and openness that the subject looks at you and the camera. 

9. Get close. 

This is a common mistake with many photographer's travel photos. Does your subject look too small in your photos? You have to get close if it is needed for the type of photo you are taking.

10. Try your best to be original. 

There have been thousands of photos taken of most famous monuments and popular places. Taking a photo that thousands have taken before is challenging to make original, but you can make it happen. A great way to do so is to pay attention to details that others may not have. 

11. Take lots of photos. 

You can never take too many photos. With one scene, explore different angles and points of view and with different lenses. It is always best to take more photos than you need; you never know when that one perfect photo will turn up! 

12. Don't be afraid of separating from the group. 

When you are in a destination where many people travel, or in a city that has tons of people taking photos of all the same things, it can be hard to look for unique opportunities. Make it a point to step away from the group and look for a more original angle that others have overlooked.
