Summer 2015 Camera Giveaway Winner Update

We are thrilled to announce that Josh Albanese is the lucky winner from our August camera giveaway! He was lucky enough to win a Canon EOS 5D Mark III! 

Josh and his wife began their wedding photography business, Serious Joy Photography, a little over a year ago. We want to introduce you to Josh and tell you a little bit about his passion for photography and his journey. 

How did you first get into photography? 

"Before we got married, my wife and I decided to get a degree in photography, and start our own wedding and portrait photography business. Our business is now about a year old and we are excited to see what is over the horizon."

What is your favorite thing to photograph?

"Honestly, I love to photograph anything and everything. Although, if I had to choose, it would have to be people. Faces tell significant stories. It's my passion to capture and tell those stories through the weddings and portraits my wife and I photograph."

What type of style would you say fits you best?

"Clean cut, crystal clear but dream-like. Almost like a wanderlust feel."

What is your most favorite shoot you have ever had and why?

"Our latest wedding we did would have to be my favorite. The wedding was a boho-vintage, outdoor style that took place at a vineyard. It was so beautiful and easy-going. The bride and groom were so humble yet fun-loving people. I just really enjoyed being around them."

What was your first reaction when you found out you won the camera?

"It felt like a dream! I was literally an emotional wreck because my wife and I were actually needing a new camera body. We had been praying that God would provide the supplies and equipment that we needed... he is most certainly a good God!" 

Are there any other fun or interesting facts about yourself that you would like to share?

"Other than the fact that I love photography and videography, I love to play my guitar, my wife and I enjoy long boarding and I love Jesus Christ with all of my heart."

What do you think of the Canon EOS 5D Mark III now that you have received it?

"It is even more than I hoped for! I can take beautiful photos and videos with it and can not wait to continue using in my photography moving forward."

January Camera Winner Update

Another of our wonderful camera giveaways has come and gone and we are now thrilled to announce that Rick Wright is the lucky winner from our January giveaway! He was lucky enough to win a brand new Canon 5D Mark III!

Rick moved around with his family while he was growing up living in Upstate New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, as well as spending five years in Great Britain but when people ask he says his home is Stow, Massachusetts. He spent several years earning degrees at Cornell University then attended seminary in Richmond, Virginia. Rick, his wife and two daughters now live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana for the past 15 years. He serves as a minister with internationals at a Baptist church and sometimes teach Biblical Hebrew as an adjunct instructor at Louisiana State University.
 
We want to introduce you to Rick and tell you a little more about himself and how he started his photography journey.

How did you first get into photography?
 
“I started in high school when I invested in a Nikon FG20 35mm that took fantastic photographs.”
 
What is your favorite thing to photograph?

“I like to photograph mostly nature, art, historical sites and artifacts, and anything that strikes me as funny or interesting.”

What type of style would you say fits you best?

“To me the universe is not full of things so much as it is full of creatures – and everything in creation (no matter how large such as a star or small such as a blade of grass) is somehow unique. I would describe my style as trying to capture the uniqueness – in a sense the personality – and the place within creation of everything I photograph.”
 
What is your most favorite shoot you have ever had and why?

“My favorite shoot was two years ago at my sister’s wedding on the Minnesota north shore right along Lake Superior. I took dozens of photographs of the beautiful scenery – water, shoreline, rocks and trees.”
 
What was your first reaction when you found out you won the camera?

“Of course my first reaction was whether this was for real. Along with disbelief that out of the thousands of others who entered, I would actually win something. Then I was deeply grateful for and excited about winning a camera of such high quality.”
 
Are there any other fun or interesting facts about you that you would like to share?

“I love astronomy and animals, I play the bassoon, and enjoy music (especially classical, opera, and liturgical).”

Drone Winner Update

We were so excited to have our very first drone giveaway in December and are now thrilled to announce that Brandi Tressler is the winner from our Drone giveaway! She was lucky enough to win a DJI Phantom 2 Vision+ Drone!

With a passion for photography that started when she was a little girl, Brandi now loves using her young daughter as the subject in many of her photos. She has a love for capturing real people and the real emotions they have and enjoys exploring the world around her so she can showcase amazing architecture, landscapes and even animals in her work.  

We want to introduce you to Brandi and tell you a little about herself and how she got into photography.

 

How did you first get into photography?

“As far back as I can remember, I have had a camera in hand. I was always the friend at sleepovers in junior high with a camera, or on trips, or just hanging out. I got my first DSLR about 9 years ago and vowed never to shoot in Auto. I haven't looked back.”

 

What is your favorite thing to photograph?

“I have a 5 year old, so she's often the subject of my photos. I love photographing architecture, landscapes, animals, etc. Vacations for me are all about photography, when everyone else is usually all about activities. I want things to look at and explore so I can capture them. I'm pretty addicted to Instagram.”

 

What type of style would you say fits you best?

“I have a pretty straightforward style - I like to photograph what I see. Candid shots are my absolute favorite. I love to capture people as they are, with real emotion. I'm not much for posed portrait work and shoots. Not that they are bad, and I've done a few here and there, but that isn't where my heart is when I'm behind the camera. I don't like to manipulate images too much in Photoshop...just a few tweaks here and there to fix things that I didn't get right in camera. I'm always learning and trying to better my skills so that I don't have to tweak too much.”

 

What is your most favorite shoot you have ever had and why?

“As far as people go, I was asked to photograph a friend's adoption when they got their last child - talk about candid and emotional. It was a special day and I was honored to be able to share it with them. (It's a little more challenging to shoot photos with tears in your eyes, by the way.)

As for for other types of photography, I've been able to go explore abandoned houses and buildings in small Texas towns with some members of my photography club, and those have always been a blast.”

 

What was your first reaction when you found out you won the drone?

“I was shocked, and then I was like, "wait, what is that??" I'm more familiar with your DSLR giveaways, so I had been in the habit of entering to win every day, so I don't even know that I was paying as much attention when I entered for the drone. Once I googled it, I was completely excited! When it arrived, I was completely intimidated!! LOL”

 

Are there any other fun facts about you that you would like to share?

“I just want to thank you so much for hosting these giveaways, and for introducing me to the world of drone photography that I otherwise probably would have never explored on my own!”

October Camera Winner Update

Another camera giveaway has come and gone and we are very happy to announce that Michael with Michael J. Photography & Design is the lucky winner from October!

And what a great story he has. When we first reached out to Michael as our winner this is what he had to say: “I cannot believe I have won. You have no idea how happy I am that I am almost in tears. I’m an event and music photographer for a local magazine and recently lost my camera in a flash flood in Tennessee while sleeping in a tent at a music concert I was shooting. Thank you so much!! I can’t express how happy I am to be able to continue on with my passion.”

Michael decided that he wanted the Canon 5D Mark III as his grand prize and we want to introduce you to Michael and tell you a little about himself, his company and how he got into photography.

When did you get your first camera?

“My first camera was an old 35mm Canon film camera I borrowed for a photography class I was in. Even today I still enjoy shooting film.”

What made you want to start doing photography?

“I was a Video Game artist for 20 years and got very burned out I so I ended up going back to school and discovered that I had a new creative passion for photography.”

Tell us a little bit about your journey since beginning your business?

“When I decided on my new career path as a photographer it was a long journey with tons of free shooting. I took portraits and even photographed many events downtown to build up my portfolio. A local magazine would print my work and that allowed me to be able to gain respect for my craft.”

What is your most favorite thing you like to photograph?

“I love to change things up and shoot a little of everything. I enjoy creative fashion and glamour shooting and sports photography but my favorite thing to shoot is live music.  There is nothing like catching that awesome music moment.”

 

Tell us about the best photography session you have ever had?  

“There have been so many. I would have to say my top two would have to be a tie between shooting George Lucas at our American Graffiti event or getting to be in the photo pit during a Tom Petty concert.”

 

How is winning this camera going to help you and/or your business?

“It will help Michael J. Photography & Design to stay in business. My camera got washed away in a flash flood in Tennessee while shooting a Muddy Roots concert. It had taken me years to buy it. My back up camera that I have been using since is a old dinosaur and the quality of my photos have fallen, especially when I am shooting concerts.”

 

What made you choose the Canon camera?

“I have alway used Cannon products and so has my family.”

 

Here’s what Michael told us when the camera was delivered:

“I got the camera yesterday..I think I scared the UPS driver when I heard the truck pull up, I swung open the door and caught him off guard and surprised him. I told him Santa came in a brown truck this year. Thank you again, btw I hate being in front of the camera.”

August Camera Winner Update

We are happy to announce that our August camera giveaway has come and gone and a lucky winner has been chosen! Randy Hall with Randy Hall Photography was chosen as our winner and decided that he wanted the Canon 5D Mark III as his grand prize.

Here is a small bio about Randy and and his photography journey:

Randy is a Vancouver Island photographer specializing in nature photography, whether it is capturing natural settings such as seascapes or forest landscapes or the plants and animals that inhabit this part of British Columbia.  He considers himself a landscape photographer first, but also an opportunistic wildlife photographer.

Randy says, “my photos are my interpretation of works by a true master… Mother Nature”.

Randy has developed a style that shows enhanced colours and contrast.  When many people think of contrast, they think colours and tones.  There can also be contrast in content.  An example of this can be seen in some of Randy’s early morning images of Parksville Bay.  Towering or threatening clouds can instill the feeling of unrest, while the calm waters of the bay say serenity. “It’s this type of scene, and the incorporation of weather, that interests me the most”.

 

Here are a few other fun facts about Randy:

The current equipment he uses is the Canon EOS Rebel T3i, 18-55mm lens, 55-250mm lens Tamron 24-70mm lens

Randy has work at the Oceanside Village Artists’ Gallery and Island Exposures Art Gallery both in Parksville

“I was in initial disbelief, followed by thinking about the learning curve, followed by excitement and wanting to see what I can do with a higher-end camera.  I’m not sure it’s really sunk in yet.”
