10 Powerful Military Photos

With the upcoming Memorial Day weekend ahead of us we take time to remember those military members who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our great country and those who currently serve to help protect our freedom. To help remember, we wanted to share 10 powerful military photos with you today that we first saw on Mashable

The Department of Defense recently announced the winners of its 2015 photo competition, called the Visual Information Awards Program, which honors the best in military photography of the year. More than 2,432 photos were entered into the annual competition.

This program celebrates the work of photographers, videographers, journalists, mass communication specialists and graphic artists serving in the different branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. Staff Sgt. Kenny Holston, USAF was named this year's Military Photographer of the Year.

Check out a few of the winners below!

Hon. Mention in the Combat Training category: A Marine purses his eyes and lips shut as he is dragged from a mock booby trap in the “Pit and Pond” obstacle during the endurance course on April 19 at the Jungle Warfare Training Center, Okinawa, Japan. The endurance course is the final event Marines participating in jungle warfare training must face, trudging through roughly five miles of Okinawa jungle and 30 obstacles. Marines got creative in shuffling their squad mates beneath loose Plexiglas, avoiding contact with the “booby trap” at all costs. If any portion of the pane is touched, all Marines in a 5-meter radius are considered casualties and have to go back through the Pit and Pond. The Marines are with Company L, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment. The Hawaii-based battalion is attached to 4th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force as part of the unit deployment program.

Marines ran in 12-man squads over roughly five miles of Okinawa jungle and through 30 obstacles in JWTC’s culminating event, which helps to build upon what the Marines learned through the previous week of jungle warfare training. In A Photography Rut? Here Are 5 Ways To Get Out!

Taking photos is something you love to do... whether you do it as a profession or hobby. Just like anything else in life, you can get into a funk and struggle to produce photos that are unique, different or even something you really are excited about. Don't worry... a photography rut can happen to the best of us. Writers get writers block, athletes go through rough times... but there is a way to break out of that photography rut that you find yourself in.

Here are a few ways to get out of your photography rut and start shooting the photos that you know you are capable of doing!

1. Change It Up

Many times photographers tend to photograph what they know but that can get monotonous. Change it up and experiment with other subjects. If you shoot landscapes, try taking some portraits. If you are a wedding photographer, maybe test your skill photographing a sporting event.

2. Don't Stop Shooting

Just because you are in a rut, doesn't mean you should put your camera away and stop for a few days or weeks. You should actually do the opposite. Continue to bring your camera with you and find new things to photograph that happen in your every day life or travels. If you are having to take photos of the same type of subject you always do because of your profession, switch up those photos by experimenting with different camera settings, backgrounds or lighting.

3. Find A Photography Group

Being around others who love the same things that you love can always bring inspiration and new ideas. Find a local photography group or plan a monthly get together with all of your photography friends who all love taking photos as much as you do. Different social media sites also have photography related groups that you could join.

4. Purchase or Rent New Equipment

There is nothing like getting some new equipment to help increase your excitement! Anytime you get a new gadget, toy or technology, it is fun to test it out, play around with its different features and see what it can do. The same goes for a new camera, editing program, or any other type of photography related item. It is not always feasible to buy something new, so check out local rental shops. If you are looking for some great deals on new photography actions and presets, business tools and more, be sure to check out Photographer Candy!

5. Do A Daily Photo Project

To make things a bit more interesting, having a project to work on will keep your mind going. We love the idea of a daily photo project. This type of project will make you take at least one photo a day and may get you to think outside of the box. Michael Pach is a photographer in Colorado Springs who did a photo project where he took a photo of the same tree every single day for a year and it is amazing how different each photo is. Read more about his tree photo project here.

“Stunning peaks and thousands of King Penguins on South Georgia in soft early sunrise. The photography challenge was to resist shooting only penguin close-ups (very tempting for sure) and step back occasionally to be equally amazed by the landscape in which they live. Special Bonus: It was 100 years to the month that Shackelton’s boat (Endurance) finally went under the Antarctic pack ice in Nov 1915, precipitating his epic traverse of South Georgia, before finding help at nearby Stromness (a year later).”

“Devotees carrying the palki, sedan chair, of Shiva. The Shiva’s Temple, known as Khandoba locally, is a very famous temple situated in the town of Jejuri, in Maharashtra, India. Every year on the day of Somvati Amavasya — a no moon day — thousands of devotees arrive at the temple. The festival’s main ritual is offering of turmeric powder by the devotees. Such large quantities of turmeric powder are used that all the devotees and the temple ground are covered in yellow color of the turmeric.”

“This amazing stacked architecture of Hong Kong shows the housing of its rather dense population. It’s visually striking to understand that your whole horizon is built from people’s lit windows. It shocks you that each life — so big and important to the person himself and his close circle — looks just like a tiny star in a huge sky next to millions of the same stars.”

Magnificent Canadian Landscape Photos By Victor Aerden

There are so many amazing places around the world. Capturing those places and their landscapes can make for some awesome photography. Today, we wanted to share a few magnificent Canadian landscape photos that we found on Weather.com that are truly breathtaking.

Photographer Victor Aerden moved to Canada from Belgium with his family, and he began to explore his new home through photography. He shows so many gorgeous natural landscapes that are full of greenery, water and snow!

Aerden told Weather.com, "It's difficult not to be inspired to take photos in Canada; the natural beauty here is awe-inspiring."

He is 100% correct, the beauty that he has captured in these photos have already gotten some great publicity! We hope you enjoy these as much as we do!

Aerden has only been photographing as a hobby for about a year, but these magnificent Canadian landscape photos have already helped him gain a significant following.

The photographer cites the role of weather in the mood he captures in his images to Weather.com. He says, "In Belgium we get a lot of dull grey skies. Weather in Canada is better in general, we get more blue skies here in Alberta, and more dramatic weather too, which make for cool sunsets and sunrises and amazing skies."

To see more of Victor Aerden's work, be sure to follow him on Instagram.

If you loved these photos, here are a few others you are sure to enjoy:

Consider These 4 Things When Pricing Your Photography

Pricing your photography is so important. We have talked about it before... photography is so popular and it has become much easier over the years for anyone to buy a camera and start taking photos.  Some of you are professional photographers who use your photography to earn a living, some of you may just do your photography on the side, while others may just have a passion for it but are not concerned about making money with your photography

We have talked in the past about how much you should be charging for your photography but today we want to talk about things you need to consider when you are actually trying to set your prices. You need to think about various costs that your business will incur and charge based on that. You want to make sure you are making your income goals and also covering your business expenses. If you do not think about these things when making your prices, sadly, your business may not make it.

Here are 4 questions you want to ask yourself when trying to price your photography.

1. How much do I wish to earn in a year?

Just like any industry in the arts, whether it be photographers, writers, etc., the average person can make a decent living but will most likely not make a ton of money. The average photographer will make about $30,000 per year, while a small few make the big bucks. Again, that is not just photographers. Think about the popular novelist of our time; not everyone makes the same salary that James Patterson does.

But remember, if photography is what you are passionate about, and you are up to the challenge of building your business, you can make a decent living. What is better than doing something that you love?

2. How much are my annual business expenses?

We have touched base on this point for wedding photographers in our recent post "3 Tips To Pricing Your Wedding Photography Packages to Sell." No matter what type of photographer you are, you need to figure out an estimate of what your business expenses will be before you price out your services.

Think about every cost your business will incur. Do you own an office space or studio? If so, you need to include the monthly rent for that as well as any internet, electricity and other items you may need such as decor. You will also need to think about the costs to update, clean and buy equipment. If you use specific computer programs for photo editing or do marketing (which we talk about in #3), those are other costs to think about. Then of course you need to factor in little costs here and there that you will need such as meals and travel expenses you incur while going to photo shoots, weddings or sessions.

All of these items together can tell you how much you need to make money at the MINIMUM. Based on this number, you will know for sure that you at least need to make this amount to cover your business costs, and anything over that will be yours.

3. What is the cost to do marketing?

Marketing is very important for your business. This can include everything from the sponsored posts you buy on Facebook or Instagram, Google AdWords, money you spend on bridal shows, marketing materials like fliers, business cards and more. These are essential expenses because marketing yourself and your business is a great way to get new clients and get the word out about what you can offer.

4. How often do I want to work over the next year?

Based on what your salary goal is over the next year, and all of your different expenses, you need to decide how much you want to work. If you are a wedding photographer, do you want to try and book at least one wedding each week, or two a month? If you do not want to work as much, you need to consider that and remember that will play into how much money you end up making.

Do you still need a little more help with pricing your services? Here is a great guide that we love called "Photographer Pricing Made Easy." This guide is for every type of photographer and will give you over 125 pricing packages in every type of niche you can think of. You can get this awesome guide today for $149.99!

5 Questions To Ask Yourself Before You Book Your First Wedding

Wedding photography can be difficult. If you are about to shoot your very first wedding, or even just starting to consider getting into the huge industry of weddings, remember that is can be a tough job. Your very first shoot that you ever do is important and before you commit to photographing one of the most important days in a couple's life, you want to ask yourself a few questions to make sure you are totally ready.

Are your photography skills ready?

Sometimes this question can be hard for some photographers. You may be able to shoot portraits wonderfully or have always been able to capture a beautiful sunset but capturing all the photos you need to at a wedding requires a few other skills.

You must be organized and good at logistics and staying on schedule. A wedding is a schedule... everything is in order and set to happen at a certain time. Sometimes that schedule gets pushed back for various reasons like weather, or someone who is running late. You also have to be able to work well with other people. You will be coming across many different personalities, some who are nervous, anxious or stressed, and you need to be able to work with each one easily and get the job done no matter what. A wedding is pretty intense and you may feel a lot of pressure to get exactly what the couple is looking for so being relaxed and able to go with the flow is a great skill to have.

Do you need help?

It is hard for one photographer to capture everything you need to at a large wedding. Having a second shooter or an assistant to be another set of eyes is a great idea. While you are off taking photos of the bridal party and the newlyweds, your assistant can be in the reception capturing photos of the little details and guests. Even while people are dancing and having fun, it is good to have someone focused on the bride and groom and still know that other things happening are not being missed.

It is important to find someone who you know you can work well with. Like we said before, a wedding is a stressful and tense event and very fast moving, so working together is imperative. Be sure to read this article on 3 things to think about when you are considering hiring a second shooter

What should you charge?

If you have never photographed a wedding before, you may not really know what you should charge the couple. You can not price yourself out of the market, but you also do not want to price yourself so low that you do not make any profit.

To decide on your price, try to determine what the entire wedding day will cost you in your time spend, travel to and from the event, any equipment you may need to buy or rent, and even the cost of a second shooter. Also remember insurance you need and meals you bought that day while working. If you still need a little help, this article "How Much You Should Really Be Charging For Your Photography" may help you out!

Also be sure to check out 3 Tips To Pricing Your Wedding Photography Packages To Sell.

Do you have the right gear?

You do not have to have the most expensive camera on the market to take great photos but you do need to make sure you are ready with the equipment and tools you need to shoot and entire wedding day. You need to have a tripod in case it is needed. You also want to make sure you have extras of everything just in case something breaks. Think about extra lenses, memory cards, extra lighting if you think you will need it. It is also good thinking to have an extra camera as backup. We know that sometimes the cost is hard to have a second one... but what if your camera decides to stop working right in the middle of the bride and grooms first dance? What will you do for the entire rest of the wedding if you do not have a backup? It could be disastrous.

Is my insurance in order?

You need to have insurance if you own any business. Something can always go wrong, and sometimes things can go terribly wrong and you want to make sure you have insurance to help if needed. Some of your equipment could get damaged or you or your second shooter could get injured somehow. If this happens, insurance is necessary. Many venues - especially those very high-end ones- will not even let you work on their premises if you can not provide proof of insurance.
